2009 First Half Fantasy Baseball All Stars

by Howard on July 10, 2009

With the mid-point of the season just days away, I thought it was an appropriate time to start celebrating those picks that have not only helped you to the top of your standings, but have also made you look like a genius to your fellow GMs.  While MLB’s All Star Game is a parade of stars from Hanley Ramirez and Tim Lincecum to Joe Mauer and Roy Halladay, fantasy all stars come in different packages.  As we all know, fantasy championships are won in the later rounds.  We use our top picks and big money bids on the top stars out there, but it’s the 20th round sleepers and $1 pick-ups that really make the difference.  So with that, I picked players based not only on performance, but on things like average draft position, pre-season rankings, and how far they have exceeded expectations.  The full article was done the other day for AddictFantasySports.com, but I’m linking it here for all to see.  It is my pleasure to announce RotoBuzz.com’s 2009 First Half Fantasy Baseball All Stars.

Adrian Gonzalez over Prince Fielder? I contest!
Prince’s 63 walks, while not 67 are pretty good against 72 K’s. AGonz has only 6 less strikeouts, so I think in this department they are pretty even steven. Prince’s BA is sitting nicely above .300 while Agonz is at .253, so it is clear who has the better eye.

77 RBI’s to 52 is what it is, and I completely understand Agonz really has no one to drive in beyond chase headley (yeah that’s a joke), the OBP is good for both, but Fielder is well above .400, so he gets the edge. Same with slugging percentage.

Fielder is clearly the number 1 beyond Pujols.

Overall stats wise, yes. I agree with you that Fielder is the #2 behind Pujols. But his and Gonzalez’ numbers aren’t that far apart and one of the deciding factors here was draft position.

On average, Fielder was taken atleast 2 rounds ahead of Gonzo and in some cases taken as high as 15th overall. I gave the nod to Gonzolez based on the value aspect. Where he was taken vs what he’s produced.
