As I sit and write my next installment for Fantasy Baseball Keeper League Advice, the news from the baseball world is pumping out some alarming reports. Here we go….
Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee on the Move in 3 Team Blockbuster Deal
According to reports on SI.com and on RotoWorld.com, the Blue Jays, Phillies and the Mariners have come to an agreement on a 3 team trade involving 2 of baseball’s top pitchers. The details are still sketchy, but according to sources, Halladay will land with the Phillies, the Mariners will receive Lee and there’s no word as to who the Jays will be getting in return. Rumors of Cole Hamels were floating around, but I highly doubt the Phils would part with both of their top starters. I’m sure the Jays will be receiving a bounty of prospects from both Seattle and Philly with the possibility of a few major league ready guys in there as well. We’ll keep you posted as events unfold and do a fantasy baseball analysis once the details are made public. FANTASY UPDATE: The deal still isn’t official just yet, but we’ve learned more about who is going where. As it stands right now, the Phillies would get Halladay from Toronto along with prospects RHP Phillippe Aumont, RHP Juan Ramirez and OF Tyson Gilles from Seattle, the Mariners would receive Lee, and the Blue Jays would receive prospects OF Michael Taylor, C Travis d’Arnaud and pitcher Kyle Drabek from the Phillies. Word has it that Halladay has already agreed to a 3 year $60M extension. I’ve also heard that the Jays are planning on trading Taylor to the A’s in exchange for 3B prospect Brett Wallace, whom the A’s received from St. Louis in the Matt Holliday deal.
Fantasy Update White Sox Trade for Juan Pierre
It looks like the Wite Sox finally got themselves a centerfielder. Acquired from the Dodgers for 2 PTBNL, Pierre will take over in center, a position that has been a trouble spot for the Sox for some time now; save for DeWayne Wise’s spectacular catch to preserve Mark Buehrle’s perfect game. But Wise is in Philly now and Pierre becomes the man in Chicago. The aging speedster rejuvenated himself last year when he took over for the suspended Manny Ramirez and played ball like he was still a 23 year old. He got 380 at bats, managed a .308 average and swiped 30 bases. Pierre’s fantasy value gets a nice boost here as he will play regularly and obviously hit leadoff for the White Sox. He’s definitely going to have fantasy value come 2010 draft day.
Fantasy Update Boston Red Sox Sign Mike Cameron
As usual, the Red Sox have themselves involved everywhere and this time they came away with an aging, injury prone outfielder to likely replace Jason Bay. Cameron, who hit .250 with 24 HR last year for the Brewers, will either play left field or center, depending on what the Sox want to do for defense with Jacoby Ellsbury. I don’t see Cameron’s fantasy value taking on any kind of an increase. He remains someone to grab in the middle to later rounds.
Boston Red Sox Sign John Lackey
According to a report from John Heyman of Sports Illustrated who credits Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse, the Sox have inked the former Angels ace to a 5 year deal for somwhere around $85 million. Lackey, who has started off each of the last 2 seasons injured, is still a solid choice for the Sox. He may not have topped 200 innings in the last 2 seasons, but he should continue to build back up to those levels soon. He’s not the same pitcher he once was, but he’s definitely had his fair share of success against the American League East. I’ll do a little more investigating when I start up the 2010 fantasy baseball pitcher rankings, but for now, it looks like Lackey will remain somewhere in the top 20.
Angels Signing Hideki Matsui
Fully anticipating the departure of Vladimir Guerrero, the Angels have, according to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports, come to an agreement with the former Yankees DH on a one year $6.5M contract. No clue on how much it will affect Matsui’s fantasy value, but I’m expecting a decrease. In the last 3 years, he’s only hit .231 at Angel Stadium and he certainly won’t have the same caliber of guys hitting around him in the order.
