And no…this is not an April Fool’s joke.
One of the things I’ve always said to those that write in looking for fantasy baseball draft advice is that you must play with your head, not your heart. It’s real easy to get trapped into drafting players from your favorite MLB team, as your expectations for them usually run a bit higher than they do for other players due to the fact that you root for them on a personal level. We call that being a “homer” and it has the potential to ruin, not just your fantasy season, but your entire baseball season as well. You might think/hope that a player is going to rebound from an off year, return to form after an injury, or just that a youngster will develop faster than he actually will, and you’re doing yourself more harm than good. If they don’t live up to your expectations, then not only will your fantasy team suffer, but you’re also going to aggravate yourself even further as you watch your favorite club drop in the real world standings.
But not to worry. Even those of us that spend the majority of time covering the sport and offer fantasy advice can fall into a similar trap. Take my covering of the White Sox for Fanball.com as an example. I’ve spent countless hours looking at the South Siders this offseason and it’s actually gotten me more excited about the team than I have in previous seasons. That’s not to say that I’m wrong about them, but some of my projections for players might fall a bit off from those projections from the likes of Bill James or CHONE due to the fact that my extensive coverage has brought them a little closer to my heart. Personally, I think I’m still right on with my calls, but I have no problem with you taking my projections with a grain of salt. It’s completely understandable. However, I’d be remiss if I didn’t tell you to take a look at them and consider a lot of these guys for your upcoming fantasy season. There’s plenty of fantasy help on the South Side of Chicago this year. Don’t miss out!
