Pitching Report: Fantasy Baseball Two Start Pitchers for Week 23

by Howard on September 5, 2010

Is The Freak back this week? I think so.

Fantasy baseball playoffs are currently underway and fantasy baseball rotisserie leagues still have plenty of time to see some movement.  Finding yourself a couple of extra two start pitchers for the upcoming scoring period could be a big difference maker for you right now.  And what a great week to choose from.  There are plenty of guys listed in the Green Light section this week and while not all of them have the greatest matchups for themselves, historically, you’ve got plenty of available names in there that you don’t want to bench.  Personally, I think this is a great week for pitching, so if those are the categories in which you can make the most improvements on, then this is definitely a golden opportunity.   Here’s how I see the week unfolding…

News & Notes

First off, let’s check in on last week.  I wasn’t a big fan of most of the matchups, so I skipped the Super-Sleeper part and just went with the standard three.  My Start of the Week in Roy Halladay was moderate at best.  He managed to snag a win, but he gave up more runs than usual and his WHIP was very out of whack for his usual totals.  Still, he didn’t kill anyone in any category, but he wasn’t the champion we had hoped to see.

My Bust of the Week was Jonatahn Sanchez and he is currently pitching his second start right now.  Hi sfirst was fantastic as he threw 8 innings of one run ball, so he has hardy been a bust this week.  Whoops.  My bad.  However, he’s throwing against the Dodgers tonight, so there’s still time to make good on my pick.

I was looking like a genius with my Justin Masterson pick as a sleeper this week, however, due to a family emergency, he missed his second start today.  The first was tremendous though as he threw 7.2 innings of one run ball with 7 strikeouts.  Too bad he didn’t get the win though.

As for this week…

While it’s probably not the toughest call in the world to make Tim Lincecum my Start of the Week, I’m going with it based on his historical numbers against both Arizona and San Diego, coupled with the momentum from his last start as he outdueled Ubaldo Jimenez.  It’s a start like that last one in Colorado that can turn a guy around and I think that’s what’s going to happen to Lincecum down the stretch.  The Giants are playing strong ball and are in contention for a playoff spot and I don’t think little Timmy wants to be the scapegoat if they don’t make it.

My Bust of the Week is for all you Rangers fans that think Tommy Hunter and the rest of the Texas pitching staff can hang with the big hitters of the AL down the stretch.  Toronto may be out of playoff contention, they are putting up runs at an alarming rate.  And the Yankees…?  Come on.  This is the week Hunter gets knocked down a few pegs on his 2010 climb.

And as for my sleepers, I think both Madison Bumgarner and Jhoulys Chacin are primed to boost your totals if you can grab them this week.  Obviously I like Bumgarner better as he’s seen a little more of his opponents, but Chacin shouldn’t disappoint either.  If you’re playing that revolving door with pitchers, then these are two names likely to be available and each should produce solid totals across the board.

That’s about all I’ve got for you on this wonderfully sunny Labor Day Weekend.  Don’t forget that tomorrow’s first game starts at 1 PM (eastern), so make your roster moves ahead of time.

Good luck and I’ll see you all int he money this year!
