It has been a while since we have given out the Buzzies. The time is here again. However, the Buzzies will be new and improved from this point on. They will now be monthly award’s instead of the bi-weekly format usually used. One thing that will not change, however, is the hotness of our presenters. She is currently airing on the TV show “24″, but I will always remember her as the underage hottie from the movie Old School. Please welcome our presenter, Elisha Cuthbert. So hot.
This last month has been a month of pitching excellence. According to CBS Sportsline’s ranking’s, 10 of the top 15 fantasy properties in MLB were pitchers. Several of them deserve a shot at this month’s MVP. But as we all know, there can be only one (cue: Highlander music). So congratulations to this month’s winner of the Buzzie for MVP………
Matt Cain!!!!! Over the last month, Cain’s numbers are just silly. He has won all five of his starts, and just for kicks, he threw in 3 complete games. With a 34 Ks, a 2.02 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP, the ratios have helped his owners massively. We have been waiting for the results to catch up with his ability, and the time appears to be now. Congrats, Matt!
Oops! Award - This award goes to the biggest bonehead of the month. Before you assume it is going to Milton Bradley, let me tell you he didn’t win. This award is going to Cito Gaston. I have a bone to pick with this guy. Who the hell lets an American League closer bat with two outs and a five run lead after he has already thrown an inning that ended 30 minutes ago? Cito Gaston, that’s who. The result is a D.L. stint for his closer. For my full rant on this situation, check out my Closer Commentary on Barracuda Fantasy Sports by clicking here.
Who you callin’ “old”? Award - Everyone will acknowledge that Joe Nathan is a top tier closer. However, when trying to trade him the phrase that keeps coming up is that “He’s old”. Well Joe is pretty much telling you to shove that theory with his numbers over the last month. He racked up 9 saves without letting up a run, and held a WHIP of .52. That is just awesome. Not only did he give you 9 saves, but a complete game, four-hit shutout with 13 Ks. Like a fine wine, Nathan is even better aged.
Impact Newcomer Award- This pitcher has lit it up over the last month, but don’t be surprised if you have never heard of him. He didn’t make most of the fantasy baseball magazines, and not even the ever-reliable Rotoworld.com had much on him before his recent excellence. Meet Brad Bergesen. Over the last month his ownership rate in CBS leagues has jumped from 5% to 25%. His line over the last month could be from Dan Haren it is so good. He pitched 37.7 innings with 3 W, a 2.39 ERA and a .93 WHIP. His 17 Ks over that time are the only thing separating him from the elite. Will his excellence continue? Perhaps not to this degree, but his last two seasons in the minors were pretty good.
Ratio Killer Award- Pity those poor souls who may have had Dontrelle Willis in their lineup over the last month. In five starts Willis has only one that was “quality”. His ratios over that time are awful, with an ERA of 9.53 and a WHIP of 2.29. Just crushing to a fantasy team. As the newest player to go on the D.L. with “anxiety”, we wish him the best. However speaking as a fantasy GM, you should not let him near your active lineup again until these problems are in the distant past. Don’t let one start fool you into thinking all is well.
Five-Tool Award - There can be no one else. Carl Crawford is making up for last year’s slide with huge numbers this year. Over the last month he has a line of: 5 HR, 11 RBI, 12 SB, 19 R, and a .299 BA. Sick. It appears as though he has decided to skip over the “comeback year” and go straight on through to “breakout year”. We always knew the talent was there, hopefully you keeper leaguers didn’t give up on him.
How the Hell does he do it? Award - Those of you who own Mark Reynoldsmust be asking yourself that question over and over again. He had 101 ABs this month, and the strange part about his line is not the 44 times he struck out. The strange part is that with the other 57 ABs he salvaged a .287 BA with 6 HR and 24 RBI as his overall line. Even his OBP was strong at .363. With the stolen bases he continues to rack up, he is proving himself a very valuable property at third base.
